League fixtures and results and reports for 2008/2009 season

WC 22nd September

The first week of the 2008/2009 Season has begun for the eight clubs and eleven teams that belong to Cardigan Short Mat Bowling Association, and has immediately thrown up a surprise as Pencnwc team, from near New Quay, showed last years triumphant (almost unbeatable) Penrhiwllan team that the only way they can go is down - beating them 6-2. To rub salt in the wound, this event took place away at Penrhiwllan.

However, victors of the week are Manordeifi (of Abercych) who captured all eight points from unlucky Llechryd - again an away victory - as Orllwyn showed Mydroilyn how to get six points. A reformed Tygwydd team took five points off visitors Rhydlewis - again one of the more successful teams from last season - whilst Dolphins drew with Llandygwydd as did Cilgerran and Capel Dewi.

Due to the inclusion of new club, Mydroilyn, one team each week will have a rest, so Aberporth are propping up the league as they have yet to play.

Manordeifi still reign supreme

The second week of playing saw surprise leaders Manordeifi continuing their success with a 6-2 win over Dolphins to be top of the pack again. Steve Reynolds must be doing something right.

Aberporth had their first game of the season, winning 5 - 3 over Cilgerran, whilst last years champions had a 'home derby' game against Orllwyn and shared the points 4 all. Rhydlewis, Llandygwydd and Mydroilyn also had 6 - 2 victories over their opponents, Pencnwc, Llechryd and Tygwydd, respectively. New club, Mydroilyn, showed their teeth against Tygwydd making everyone else treat them with respect.

Unlucky Llechryd managed to gather a couple of points off Llandygwydd in some closely fought games, but team captain Kenneth, playing singles, was the only winner, whilst new Llandygwydd team captain, John, played a splendid game skipping the fours to victory.

As for the positions of the clubs, it was Rhydlewis and Mydroilyn that made the biggest leaps, jumping five places each. Capel Dewi appear to have slipped down a lot, as they were not playing this week.

Rhydlewis are new leaders of the pack

The fourth week of playing this season has left last weeks leaders, Llandygwydd, in fourth place as they took a rest from playing to allow the others to catch up (!). The new leaders, Rhydlewis have been playing well in all games so far, but Aberporth are the ones showing the strongest form as they took all eight points off fellow club members, Dolphins, and consequently rising from eighth to third in the table.

Orllwyn could only manage to keep one game from visitors Rhydlewis, and it was a similar situation at Capel Dewi where Manordeifi restored some pride, by snatching six points off their hosts, as did Penrhiwllan visiting Mydroilyn.

It was left until Friday evening to see if Pencnwc could overcome Tygwydd by enough points to retain their third position, but met a determined home team who won 7 -1. It was the pairs team of Mair Lloyd and Islwyn Griffiths who drew their game to a surprised Pencnwc team. The bottom-of-the-table tussle between Llechryd and Cilgerran did no favours to Llechryd as they lost 2-6.

Four clubs vie for leadership

With the fifth week's results in, four clubs begin to break away from the rest in the Cardigan Short Mat Bowls League.

With last years winners - Penrhiwllan in case you'd forgotten - not playing last week, Llandygwydd had a tough game to contain Aberporth and fought well to obtain four points off their visitors - the pairs team of Chris Thomas and Goronwy Evans in particular playing an excellent game - the rinks securing a narrow victory as well.

Elsewhere it was current leaders, Rhydlewis, defeating Orllwyn 5-3, hanging on to the pole position as Manordeifi recovered with a home 6-2 victory over struggling Capel Dewi, and creeping a point closer with wins for the Singles, Pairs and Rinks. "All of the games were played with great spirit and an enjoyable evening was had by all. The win keeps Manordeifi in the chasing pack at the top of the table but with their next two games to be played against the top teams of Rhydlewis and Aberporth, anything could happen in the next two weeks!" ace reporter Catherine said.

However all praise this week goes to bottom of the table Llechryd who secured an encouraging 8-0 win over Mydroilyn, exchanging places with them.

Pencnwc had an unexpected 3-5 defeat to visitors Cilgerran whilst Dolphins played well against Tygwydd winning 6-2. All four of these teams, and Penrhiwllan, now sit level in the league table which now looks as follows. 5 teams have played one less game than the others and Orllwyn have a week's rest this coming week.

Llechryd suffer as Aberporth apply the pressure

With the weather turning cold, the Bowls League heated up as Aberporth knocked Llechryd for eight. It just isn't cricket - it's bowls which is why they got eight!

After Llechryd's excellent result last week, Aberporth were taking no chances, so they fielded a strong team and, at home, should have felt confident of taking a good few points. Both mats were running very fast, so fast that quite a few early woods ended up in the ditch. Despite some great bowling from Llechryd, Aberporth cruised to a comfortable win in both the singles and the pairs.

In the triples it seemed to be going all one way, with Aberporth steaming ahead to lead 9 - 0 by the 4th end. However the visitors rallied in the 5th end but the home team then took 4 in one end, making it an uphill struggle for Llechryd from then on. The rinks went much the same way and no doubt the visitors were glad to sit down for a cup of tea and some food.

The top of the table tussle between Rhydlewis and Manordeifi resulted in a draw as neither side wanted the other to gain any advantage knowing that other teams were snapping at their heels!

The top four teams didn't change position, but both Aberporth and Llandygwydd closed the gap on the two at the top slightly. The chasing pack split up with both Cilgerran and Dolphins securing six points from their opponents, Mydroilyn and Pencnwc.

Capel Dewi managed to capture three off Penrhiwllan - a situation unbelievable last year - leaving the ex-champions still below Cilgerran and Dolphins.

The 'derby' game between Tygwydd and LLandygwydd was held in a spirit of great friendliness, with Darren Davies maintaining his 100% record in his singles games, but these were the only points Tygwydd could manage to obtain from their club colleagues. This left the question of 'why is it called a "Derby" game?' Are three teams breaking away from the others? Will the revamped Llandygwydd team make inroads? Will Penrhiwllan sack their manager? The League table now looks as follows. Some teams that have played one less game than the others and it's top of the table Rhydlewis who have a weeks rest this coming week as the next two battle it out together. Could be fireworks!

Rhydlewis Seek the Title

With only four weeks of the first half of the season left, there was some jockeying for position amongst the top teams. My mathematical error last week which had Cilgerran languishing in sixth place was simply a ruse to spur them on as they planned their match against Dolphins. In reality, they had 38 points and were actually in fourth equal position before this game. Perhaps it was because it was unbelievable that they were higher than my own team!! Who knows? It worked, though, and they took five points off Dolphins who were left swimming around looking for the beach ball.

On Monday Capel Dewi played near neighbours, Orllwyn, in a well-contested game that ended with both teams having an equal share of the prizes.

Three games took place on Thursday with a top-of-the-table tussle between Aberporth and Penrhiwllan. The singles was a cautious game with neither player risking extravagant shots. However the home player pulled ahead early on and maintained the lead until the end of the game.

Whilst the Penrhiwllan pairs settled well to the mats and led from the start, the triples and the rinks were more evenly matched. The triples was still all square going in to the last end and was won by one when the home skip elected not to bowl the last wood. Is that sporting? He could have at least made a fumbled attempt and hit the block!

In the rinks, the visitors gave Aberporth a tough time – “about time” most of us were thinking. The match was tight from the start with the score 6 all by the 8th end. Penrhiwllan then took two in the 9th and it was up to the home team’s skip to make a valiant attempt with her last wood, to steal the jack for two, possibly three, and celebrity status.

We’ve all been there; savouring the anticipation of fame, however brief; knowing that everyone is watching with bated breath. But she was unlucky with her last bowl and ended up one more shot down. She was not a celebrity – ignomy beckoned. Will she be picked next week? Will we ever know?

If you can imagine placing a bet on who will win this years League competition in April, I would suggest Rhydlewis as a good one to look out for. Last week they took on Llandygwydd and captured all eight points. None of the games were one-sided affairs, but whenever the visitors got a good end in, the coach drivers responded with accurate woods.

A northern battle took place at Pencnwc when Mydroilyn visited them. It was not to be the newcomers night as the redcoats took away all eight points here as well, lifting them up in the league table.

Whilst the northern local derby was taking place, there was another, eastern, one going on. Orllwyn went over to Capel Dewi and managed to share the points here as well.

Yet another local event took place as Llechryd travelled the three miles to play Tygwydd. The Tyggy-wiggles flush with success from their game the previous week, looked to improve their position and do the unthinkable – catch their team-mates, Llandygahole. They managed to capture six of the eight points which put them closer to their rivals. Llechryd meanwhile had to walk home licking their wounds, again.

While all this fun was going on Manordeifi just had to look on frustrated at being unable to play as they took their turn to rest, watching to see how their second place was being threatened by Rhydlewis, hoping that Llandygwydd would come up trumps. They didn’t, but nor did any of the others apart from the ten coachmen of the apocalypse who now top the table! However Manordeifi had a cunning plan and, just to keep their practice in, they played St Dogmaels in a friendly (remember them, “friendlies”?). The Dogs are not in the League – won’t come out of their kennel to play apparently – but can field some good players. A good time was had by all with the winner possibly being the floor.

As we close in on Christmas and the half-way stage, it can be seen that this year is producing a close-run contest which keeps people interested in reading this! Although two teams head the table, no one can rule out any of the chasing teams. Who knows, even the six in the bottom group may spring a surprise – even Tygwydd. No! Surely not.

It will be Dolphin’s turn to rest this week, when the really interesting games must be Manordeifi’s game against Penrhiwllan and Llandygwydd’s Ugly Sisters versus the Pantomime Dames of Cilgerran. (Will they win? Oh! Yes they will! Oh! No they won’t.)

The Redcoats upset the formbook

With only two weeks of the first half of the season left, there was almost no change in the league positions last week – apart from Dolphins who didn’t play due to being rested. One other game, Orllwyn v Tygwydd, was postponed. However there was a sting in the tail for potential leaders, Aberporth – who became “Aberpoor” when Pencnwc stung them for six points.

On Monday Capel Dewi played Mydroilyn and won 5-3. However the newcomers must take heart that they got three points, only a few weeks ago well-fancied Llandygwydd got nothing (and Mydroilyn are due to play them shortly)!

Only one game took place on Thursday which is when Pencnwc caused a major upset by taking six points off the title hopefuls. Apparently only the pairs game went the seasiders’ way but this was a close-run thing.

Paul Edwards reported that the singles game was tough, dominated early on by Pencnwc.  Although the visiting player brought it back from 10-2 to 10-8, he left it too late and lost the game 11-8  The game was sealed with an excellent weight shot by the home player with his last but one shot that made it extremely difficult even to get a draw.

The ‘pairs’ was a more evenly matched affair with ends mostly won by ones & twos. Aberporth struggled, but managed to take the game 10-9 on the last end.

On the triples mat, the jack was held and stolen on countless ends.  At 7-5 down going in to the last end, the visitors were in dire straits. Even with a desperate weight shot on the last end, they could not pull it back, ending the game 10-5 down.

The home team were keeping a tight rein in the rinks and were 10-7 up by the 7th end. In the 9th end, Aberporth scored a magnificent 5 and managed to drag it back to 11 all! The home team kept a steady nerve with their skip taking them from 3 or4 down to one up with his last wood. What a nail-biter!

The Orllwyn v Tygwydd game was postponed as several Tygwydd players were unavailable due to various other events associated with Christmas – I am led to believe that another game next week is also affected. Come on you guys, its BOWLS – you’re not going to let Christmas get in the way are you?

The three games on Friday included the top of the table clash between Manordeifi and Penrhiwllan and the Llandygwydd v Cilgerran game which both ended up as draws, Manordeifi missing a chance to catch up with the leaders, whilst the Llechryd v Rhydlewis game went true to form with the coachmen taking six points.

We are approaching the half-way stage and it’s a close-run thing. The gaps between the teams is not great, but Rhydlewis appear to be in a commanding position.

It is Mydroilyn’s turn to rest this week, when the really interesting game must be Aberporth at home to Rhydlewis. I believe that the postponed game between Orllwyn and Tygwydd will be played next week – if Santa allows.

Seasiders Try to Ruin Rhydlewis’s Christmas

There is only one week of the first half of the season left, and the battle for supremacy rages with four teams jostling for pole position as we go into the second half.

Pencnwc, having sprung a surprise on Aberporth last week, got themselves humbled by Llandygwydd who took six valuable points from their hosts. Meanwhile Aberporth took on the top team and also managed to secure six points. The singles was a closely fought game which could have gone either way. The coachmen took the triples game, but couldn’t capture anything in the other two games.

Robert had a breese of a game taking a commanding lead in his singles game at Pencnwc. John Evans fought back, but there are only 12 ends John – and you needed a few more. It was a bad moment for Llandygwydd when their rinks team lost six in one end and were forever catching up from then on. Consequently, Rhydlewis stay top, but only just.

Penrhiwllan, now getting into their stride, took on the Dolphins who came a cropper by losing all four games. Manordeifi visited Tygwydd and took away six points.

The real surprise of the week goes to lowly Llechryd who hosted Capel Dewi and secured six points – their best result of this season so far – a much welcome encouragement.

The Cilgerran v Orllwyn game was postponed until late January – don’t tell me a panto was involved?

Next week the recently postponed Orllwyn v Tygwydd game will be played in addition to the normal weeks’ itinery. Pencnwc will be rested, so they’ve completed their half season. The game of the week ought to be Rhydlewis v Penrhiwllan, whilst title-chasers, Aberporth, take on Tygwydd. The coachmen will have be in their best form if they’re to keep the seasiders off the top spot.

Rhydlewis are no longer in such a commanding position, as last weeks’ game showed. Manordeifi and Penrhiwllan are chasing, but there is a fair gap to the next few teams – a gap that will be increasingly more difficult to close as the season progresses.
